1. General information
The objective of this course is to analyse processes of second language acquisition, and to reflect on and critically evaluate different methods of formal, non-formal, and informal learning of English as a foreign language.
These approaches and objectives are aligned with Objective 4: Quality Education.
2. Learning results
* Identify and critically and self-critically evaluate the processes of L2/FL acquisition/learning in a global multicultural context.
* Identify and critically and self-critically evaluate L1 and L2/FL acquisition processes naturally (i.e. without formal instruction).
* Observe and experiment with different forms (approaches and methods of formal instruction) to improve and maintain communicative and intercultural competence in English.
* Develop basic enquiry activities (information seeking, analysis and synthesis of information, exchange and critical appraisal of information) in an autonomous way, which enable him/her to reflect on language as a language user and on language as an object of study.
* Develop activities involving the application of knowledge to practice, the interrelation of ideas, creativity and initiatives, problem-solving, decision-making, as well as time management and quality assessment through criticism and self-criticism.
3. Syllabus
The course contents are the following:
1. What is Second Language Acquisition (SLA)?
2. External factors in SLA.
3. Internal factors in SLA.
4. Individual differences in SLA.
5. Classroom teaching and SLL.
4. Academic activities
The classes will consist of a brief theoretical review of the compulsory readings of the subject, followed by practical activities, carried out individually and in groups, in which the student will put into practice skills such as critical reflection, autonomy, decision making, problem solving and self-criticism.
Learning activities include theoretical classes, practical activities, individual activities, individual and group tutorials and assessment activities.
5. Assessment system
First call
Global assessment test: It will consist of a theoretical-practical written test with questions corresponding to the contents of the programme and its application to practical cases (100% of the subject, 30% theory/70% practical cases).
Second sitting
Global assessment test: It will consist of a theoretical-practical written test with questions corresponding to the contents of the programme and its application to practical cases (100% of the subject, 30% theory/70% practical cases).
Evaluation criteria:
1. Ability to apply knowledge of second language acquisition theories .
2. Capacity for criticism and self-criticism of second language acquisition processes.
3. Knowledge of the didactics and pedagogy of languages, with emphasis on English.
4. Ability to carry out linguistic assessment and correction tasks.
5. Ability to critically assess the quality of the teaching/learning process of English as a foreign language.
6. Instrumental command of the English language.
